What type of patients typically seek your services?

Breast cancer can affect so many aspects of women's lives – body image, existential concerns, relationships, sexual function, mood, physical function, fear of recurrence – yet few medical providers are comfortable or trained to talk about the psychological aspects of the disease. More so, few psychologists have experience and specific knowledge about the medical course of breast cancer and beyond. Through my training and experience in surgical, radiation, and medical oncology settings, I am one of the few psychologists who bridges this gap. My specialized training and experience will allow you to speak easily about your experience right from the start, without having to explain or translate medical aspects of your care.

My clients are generally high-functioning, psychologically-minded, motivated women who would generally describe themselves as “ok” (I know…who’s ever really ok?), but who are struggling to find their way back to “ok” since breast cancer struck.

I should note that I generally don’t treat individuals whose primary concern is anything other than adjusting to breast cancer. Just like a brain surgeon wouldn’t operate on a broken leg, I feel strongly that a breast cancer specialist isn’t the ideal provider to treat mental health conditions like obsessive compulsive, bipolar disorder, chronic depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, custody issues, etc.. There are so many exceptional therapists trained in the latest evidence-based approaches to those issues, and I believe everyone deserves to work with the best, most expert therapist for them. Simply, I consider myself most expert in the psychological aspects of breast cancer.
